The Argon3X uses a tweeter initially developed for the Krypton3X bookshelf speaker. Introduced in 2025, this bookshelf speaker incorporates certain technologies from the Amphion range. It is designed for home use while drawing on acoustic principles from the Finnish manufacturer’s professional speakers.

Acoustic design where every detail matters

The Argon3X comes in a compact yet substantial enclosure measuring 380 x 190 x 305 mm, constructed from 30 mm thick MDF panels. This robust construction, weighing 10 kg per speaker, demonstrates a no-compromise approach to resonance management. The characteristic Scandinavian design of Amphion remains faithful to the clean lines established by industrial designer Risto Pentikäinen, with a deep black waveguide that forms an instantly recognizable visual signature.

The new tweeter improves high-frequency response, offering an astonishing level of detail and clarity. This 25 mm titanium transducer, housed in the fifth-generation proprietary waveguide, represents a substantial advancement over the previous generation. The mid-bass is handled by a 165 mm aluminum cone driver, a material chosen for its lightness and rigidity. This combination of materials allows the exploitation of the intrinsic qualities of each metal—the precision of titanium in the treble and the agility of aluminum in the midrange—without suffering from the resonance issues that would affect these materials with conventional higher crossover points.

The most intriguing feature of the Argon3X lies in its passive radiator rear loading system. The passive radiator eliminates the known problems associated with bass-reflex ports, where the signal is always affected by time delay or low-midrange rise. This approach, initially developed for Amphion’s professional line, allows for bass extension down to 38 Hz (-6 dB) while preserving midrange definition. The passive radiator, visually identical to the main driver but without a magnetic motor, vibrates in sympathy with internal pressure variations, creating a sophisticated acoustic coupling that loads the room more naturally than a traditional port.

U/D/D Technology: Wide Dispersion and Coherent Stereo

Amphion’s fifth-generation proprietary U/D/D (Uniformly Directive Diffusion) waveguide offers an elegant solution to common speaker design problems. This technology does not simply aim to increase directivity as traditional Finnish waveguides do, but rather seeks to create wide and uniform dispersion. The practical result is twofold: on the one hand, the optimal listening area is significantly widened, allowing multiple listeners to enjoy a coherent stereo image; on the other hand, unwanted reflections from side walls are minimized, making the speaker less sensitive to room acoustic flaws.

Lowering the crossover point allows the speakers to function in a point-source manner. This leads to industry-leading phase coherence and imaging precision. The 1600 Hz filtering point represents a bold technical choice. By placing this transition outside the 2-5 kHz range where the human ear is most sensitive, Amphion avoids creating artifacts in the critical perception region. The waveguide also physically aligns the acoustic centers of the tweeter and mid-bass driver, with the voice coils approximately the same distance from the listener, thereby improving the system’s temporal behavior.

The revised filtering for better driver integration results in a beautiful balance between the tweeter and mid/bass drivers. This revision of the filter circuit does not merely optimize frequency response; it also improves thermal dissipation of components, contributing to the system’s long-term reliability. The electrical simplicity sought by Amphion, with a minimum of components in the signal path, contributes to the characteristic transparency that has earned the brand its reputation in professional studios.

Between Professional Studio and Listening Room

The Argon series represents the core of Amphion’s philosophy: creating speakers that reveal the truth of the recording without artificial coloration. While Amphion began as a manufacturer of home speakers, it expanded into studio products in 2013, creating a unique synergy between these two worlds. This dual expertise is evident in the Argon3X, which directly inherits technologies developed for professional monitors while remaining perfectly suited to the home environment.

The 87 dB sensitivity and 8-ohm impedance make the Argon3X compatible with a wide range of amplifiers, from tube to transistor. The recommended power of 50 to 250 watts offers great flexibility in choosing associated electronics. This versatility extends to listening conditions: thanks to U/D/D technology, the speaker maintains its qualities even when placed relatively close to walls, a valuable feature in constrained home spaces.

The available finishes reflect the attention to visual integration: in addition to the classic matte black and white, a walnut version adds a touch of Nordic warmth. The possibility of customizing the tweeter’s metal grilles with different colors allows for subtle yet effective personalization, transforming these listening tools into objects that harmoniously integrate into living spaces.
